Tres Hermanas - Little Libraries in Aguadilla

Hi, my name is Marion and my sisters and I want to invite you to be part of something pretty cool - Sending books across the United States and over the Atlantic Ocean to put them in Little Free Libraries we are building in Puerto Rico.

My family moved to Aguadilla, PR in 2017 right before the two big hurricanes - Irma and Maria. We spent a lot of time without power, water, and internet or phones. You know what we did? We read books. That’s not surprising to people who know me because I love books and I love to read books, listen to stories - and talk about them. The best book is one that I get to share with my family and friends.

Well, when we first got to Aguadilla we found that we missed our libraries in the Bay Area the most. Although there are a few libraries on the island, the only one close to me is at the University of Puerto Rico in Aguadilla - and they only have a total of 80 children’s books. We have read them all.

My school has a small library. There are about 5 (3 shelf) book shelves with books. I look forward to library day at school all month! But still, the library is a tiny amount of books and only to children that are fortunate enough to go to our private school.

So when I returned to the Bay Area I was reminded that it is so easy to get a book here. Libraries are everywhere. We pass three just driving home from the supermarket. Then there are even these tiny libraries on most street corners! Free books everywhere!

That is when it hit us. My sisters and I decided that we could take our love of books and start our own Little Free Libraries in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Upon returning to Aguadilla in October 2018 I built a bookshelf in a local park that I see kids visiting. I plan on building more and delivering children’s books in Spanish and English and offering them for free to families. Here is where you can help me!

Organize a small book drive. You can go to your class, your Girl/Boy Scout Troop, your parents’ place of work, even your public library. Tell them about your interest in this project and would they be interested too? If yes - you are only a little bit or work away from giving a kid a book.
